about your host

I graduated in 2005 from Boston University with a degree in International Relations, and after teaching English in Japan for two years have just returned from a seven-week trek through China, Southeast Asia, and Africa.

I'm fascinated by the Uyghurs of Xinjiang, Chinese civil society and NGO movements, political Islam in South Asia, and the private military contracting industry. I like taking pictures, watching spaghetti westerns, building houses with Habitat for Humanity, and long walks on the beach through abandoned buildings.

I spend considerably more time reading other blogs than writing on this one. Sample the side dishes for a recent collection of more interesting items elsewhere.
